Social Media and Internet Misuse Top Parental Concerns, Says Study

As children return to school, two problems have risen to the top of their parent's concerns, the impact of social media and the internet on children's life.  According to the University of Michigan Health CS Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, more than half of parents rank mental health issues as the top health concern for their children and teens. Overall, mental health and technology use topped this year's top ten list of parent worries about health-related issues for children in the United States, surpassing childhood obesity, which parents ranked as the top children's health issue a decade ago. “Parents still view problems directly impacting physical health, including unhealthy eating and obesity, as important children's health issues. But these have been overtaken by concerns about mental health, social media and screen time,” said Mott Poll co-director and Mott pediatrician Susan Woolford, MD, MPH. Two-thirds of parents

PayPal USD Expected to Do Better Than Facebook's Libra in Stablecoin Market

PayPal 's stablecoin is likely to succeed where Facebook 's failed, thanks to the payment giant's standing in Washington and policymakers' greater understanding of the issues in the last three years.  PayPal this month said it was launching PayPal USD, a crypto token pegged to the US dollar, making it the second major global company to launch a stablecoin after Facebook, now Meta Platforms , unveiled Libra in June 2019.  The move, which comes as PayPal transitions to a new CEO announced last week, seems risky after Facebook's stablecoin was crushed by political opposition, and as regulators home in on the crypto sector following several meltdowns.  But PayPal is in a stronger position than Facebook, said former officials, executives and analysts. Policymakers are more familiar with stablecoins, crypto tokens typically pegged to a fiat currency, than they were in 2019. A push to create federal stablecoin regulations has also helped boost their legitimacy in the e

Chandrayaan-3 Moon Landing Anticipation Builds in India After Russia’s Luna-25 Crash

India's space agency on Monday released images its spacecraft took of the far side of the Moon as it headed for an attempted landing on the lunar south pole, just days after the failure of a Russian lander. The Indian Space Research Organisation's ( ISRO ) Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft had been in a race with Russia to be the first to land on the lunar south pole, a region whose shadowed craters are thought to contain water ice that could support a future moon settlement. As news of the failure of Russia's Luna-25 mission broke on Sunday, ISRO said that Chandrayaan-3 was on course to land on August 23. The mission - Chandrayaan means "moon vehicle" in Hindi and Sanskrit - is India's second attempt to land on the south pole of the moon. In 2019, ISRO's Chandrayaan-2 mission successfully deployed an orbiter but its lander crashed. Rough terrain makes a south pole landing difficult, but making a first landing would be historic. The region's water ice cou

Smartphone Maker Honor Stages India Relaunch, Aims to Start Local Manufacturing in Early 2024

Chinese smartphone brand Honor will relaunch in India through a licensing deal with a local company and is aiming to start domestic manufacturing by early next year, its country head told Reuters. Honor had stopped selling its smartphones in India and reportedly retreated last year amid limited marketing budget and less prudent portfolio management. "India was never a focus market for the Huawei Technologies-owned Honor until 2020 - when it was forced to spin-off the brand and reassess strategy," said Neil Shah, vice president at Counterpoint Research. Honor's comeback is underpinned by a licensing deal with a newly formed Gurugram-based firm Honor Tech for an undisclosed "agreed-upon cost" tied to the transfer of technology and hardware. It will launch three variants of Honor phones in India, with the mid-ranged Number series expected by September. The company, wholly owned by local shareholders, will make, sell and service Honor-branded smartphones in I
