Baidu’s ChatGPT-Style Service ‘Ernie Bot’ to Complete Internal Testing in March as AI Race Heats Up

China's Baidu said on Tuesday it would complete internal testing of a ChatGPT-style project called "Ernie Bot" in March, joining a global race as interest in generative artificial intelligence (AI) gathers steam. Ernie, meaning "Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration," is a large AI-powered language model introduced in 2019, Baidu said. It has gradually grown to be able to perform tasks including language understanding, language generation, and text-to-image generation, it added. Search engine giant Baidu's Hong Kong-listed shares jumped as much as 13.4 percent on the news. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters last week that Baidu was planning to launch such a service in March. The person said Baidu aims to make the service available as a standalone application and gradually merge it into its search engine by incorporating chatbot-generated results when users make search requests. Metaverse Crimes Catches Interpol’s Attention, Here’s What We Know

The metaverse, exploding in its use-cases for immersive digital ecosystems, is also becoming a playground for tech-savvy criminals. The International Criminal Police Organisation (ICPO), also dubbed Interpol, is now concerned that the crimes are on a rise in the metaverse. These crimes include phishing, money laundering, sexual harassment, data theft, and counterfeiting. The Interpol is now looking at ways to keep a close observation on metaverse-related crimes. The organisation, headquartered in Lyon, France, is now attempting to define ‘crimes in the metaverse', comparing them to real-life adversities. The Interpol launched its own metaverse in October 2022 during its 90th General Assembly that was hosted in New Delhi, India. Following the launch, the organisation noticed that notorious actors were hunting for victims in the digital world and getting away with boat loads of money in largely anonymous transactions. Jurgen Stock, the Secretary General of the Interpol, believes

Goa Using Self-Driving Robot, AI-Powered Monitoring System as Lifeguards on Its Beaches

In a first-of-its-kind innovation, Drishti Marine, Goa's state-appointed lifeguard organisation, has introduced artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of Aurus, a self-driving robot and Triton, an AI-powered monitoring system, to augment its life-saving capabilities along Goa's popular beaches and water bodies. The incorporation of AI-based support follows an increase in beach-related incidents due to the rising numbers of domestic and foreign tourists flocking to the coastline. The past two years have witnessed over 1,000 rescue incidents along the coastal belt, which have required assistance from Drishti Marine's lifesavers, according to an official statement. Both the AI-monitored camera-based systems can monitor the surroundings, assess and detect risks, share real-time information with on-duty lifeguards so they may respond faster to avoid tragic incidents. Developed by Drishti Works, a division of Drishti, Aurus mans the state's expansive coastal stretch. The

Dell to Lay Off About 6,650 Employees Amidst Falling Demand for PCs: Report

Dell Technologies will eliminate about 6,650 jobs, or about five percent of its global workforce, hurt by falling demand for its personal computers, Bloomberg News reported on Monday. The company is experiencing market conditions that "continue to erode with an uncertain future," co-Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke wrote in a memo to employees, the report said. The previous cost-cutting measures, including a pause on hiring and limits on travel, are no longer enough, Clarke said in the memo. The department reorganizations and job cuts are an opportunity to drive efficiency, a company spokesperson told Bloomberg News. Dell did not immediately respond to a Reuters email for comment. Companies from Microsoft to Amazon.com and Goldman Sachs Group have cut thousands of jobs recently to help ride out a demand downturn as consumer and corporate spending shrinks due to high inflation and rising interest rates. Google parent Alphabet also eliminated 12,000 jobs last month. T
