FTC Says Meta Misled Parents on Child Protection Measures, Proposes Ban on Profiting From Minors' Data

The US  Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday accused Meta's Facebook of misleading parents about protections for children and proposed tightening an existing agreement on privacy to include a ban on making money from minors' data. Specifically, the FTC said Facebook misled parents about how much control they had over who their children had contact with in the Messenger Kids app and was deceptive about how much access app developers had to users' private data, breaching a 2019 agreement on privacy. The FTC's proposed changes include barring Facebook from making money off data collected on users under the age of 18, including in its virtual reality business. It would also face expanded limitations in using facial recognition technology. Meta shares fell as much as 2 percent on Wednesday but pared most of those losses and were off 0.3 percent at $238.50 (roughly Rs. 19,400). Meta, which also owns Instagram, relies on digital ads targeted on the basis of its user

ChatGPT Is the Start of Online Education, Not the End

Of the dozens of listed companies talking up the potential of ChatGPT -like technologies, Chegg is among the first to publicly state just how deleterious the trend could be for its business. It needn't be, though management seems ready to ride the wave of this new innovation rather than swim against the current. Chegg describes itself as a “student-first connected learning platform.” With annual revenue of just $767 million (roughly Rs. 62,76,500 crore) last year, it is nowhere near the scale of behemoths jumping on the artificial intelligence bandwagon, such as Alphabet , Microsoft and Amazon . Yet online education is a huge industry, estimated by researcher Statista at $167 billion (roughly Rs. 13,66,600 crore) this year and climbing to $239 billion (roughly Rs. 19,55,700 crore) by 2027. Chegg's slice of that market is centered around helping college students with homework and cramming for exams, and charges subscriptions starting at $14.95 (roughly Rs. 1,200 per month. T

Britain's CMA to Review Impact of AI on Consumers; Will Assess New Controls for ChatGPT-Like Technology

Britain's competition regulator said on Thursday it would start examining the impact of artificial intelligence on consumers, businesses, and the economy and whether new controls were needed on technologies such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. While research on AI has been going on for years, the sudden popularity of generative AI applications such as ChatGPT and Midjourney has highlighted a technology that could upend the way businesses and society operate. Governments around the world are now trying to find a balance whereby they can assess and rein in some of the potential negative consequences of AI without stifling innovation. Britain in March opted to split regulatory responsibility for AI between those bodies that oversee human rights, health and safety, and competition, rather than creating a new body dedicated to the technology. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which made headlines last week when it blocked Microsoft's $69 billion (nearly Rs. 5,64,100 crore

Why Web3 Builders Need Fresh Talent to Simplify Self-Custody for the Masses

World Password Day, which is celebrated on the first Thursday of May each year, serves as a reminder of the importance of strong passwords and good password management practices. While passwords play a crucial role in securing our digital lives, password complexity and security management is ultimately the responsibility of the user.  Self-custody is a critical component of the decentralised Web3 ecosystem, but it remains complex and daunting for many people. As a core promise of blockchain-driven Web3 technology self-custody provides users with the ability to retain full sovereignty over any digital asset they own. Self-custody empowers users with the ability to “be their own bank,” but power, as we know, comes with great responsibility. Getting self-custody right can be difficult. The complex nature of self-custody obligates users to understand often-complicated Web3 concepts such as secure private key and recovery phrase management, and smart contract permissions. As a result, th

Microsoft Expands AI-Powered Bing Search, Edge Browser Access to Public Amid Fears Over Potential Risks

Microsoft on Thursday expanded public access to its generative artificial intelligence programs, despite fears that tech firms are rushing ahead too quickly with potentially dangerous technology. The AI-enhanced features of the company's Bing search engine and Edge internet browser are now open for anyone to use, Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president, said in a blog post. "This means that it will now be easier than ever for everyone to try the new Bing and Edge by simply signing into Bing with your Microsoft Account," Mehdi said. The services have been enhanced with the ability to work with images as well as text, and Microsoft intends to add video to the mix, according to the executive. A Bing "Image Creator" was recently integrated into its AI chatbot's repertoire, allowing it to generate visual, as well as written, content, Mehdi said. "We are expanding Image Creator to all languages in Bing," he added. "So now you can create imag
