Microsoft-Backed OpenAI Acquires Start-Up Global Illumination to Work on ChatGPT, Other Core Products

OpenAI said on Wednesday it had acquired digital products company Global Illumination , in what comes as the first known acquisition by the storied artificial intelligence firm. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. "The entire (Global Illumination) team has joined OpenAI to work on our core products including ChatGPT ," OpenAI said. New York-based Global Illumination was founded in 2021 by Thomas Dimson, Taylor Gordon and Joey Flynn, all of whom have previously worked at Meta Platforms ' Instagram . Global Illumination most recently worked on open-source technology related to online game production. Dimson is credited with drafting some of the original code for Instagram's content ranking algorithms, according to his personal website. Apple Granted Second Face ID Patent Hinting at Potential Arrival on Future MacBook and Mac Computers

Apple has been granted a patent that will enable the firm to offer an alternate form biometric authentication on its MacBook and Mac computers. The Cupertino company currently supports unlocking Mac computers via Touch ID, on select models. It introduced Face ID on the iPhone X in 2017 that uses an array of sensors to securely authenticate a user with facial recognition. While Apple is yet to indicate that it plans to add Face ID to future MacBook models, the company's recent laptops are equipped with a display notch that looks similar to the one that is present on the company's smartphones since 2017. Spotted by Patently Apple, the company's latest patent related to facial recognition on computers was granted on August 15, nearly four years after it was filed in September 2019. Alphabet's Google will let users experiment with new features that display content created by artificial intelligence while they browse the web, as the company strives to maintain its edge in a market with new competitive threats. Earlier this year, Google released “search generative experience,” or SGE, in which users can try an experimental version of its search engine that displays AI-generated responses above the customary list of results. The company said Tuesday the product would expand to let readers use the AI tool on websites beyond Google's search engine to summarize longer articles and in-depth information. Intel, Tower Terminate Proposed $5.4 Billion Deal After Failing to Get Regulatory Approvals

Intel and Israeli contract chipmaker Tower Semiconductor's proposed $5.4 billion (roughly Rs. 44,919 crore) deal has been mutually terminated as they were unable to get timely regulatory approvals, the companies said on Wednesday. Shares of the Israeli company fell about 9 percent in the United States as well as Tel Aviv. Intel, which had decided to buy Tower last year, will pay a termination fee of $353 million (roughly Rs. 2,936 crore) to the latter, the company said in a statement. Tower and Intel did not provide details on the regulatory approvals. Reuters reported late on Tuesday that Intel would drop the deal once their contract expired without regulatory approval from China. "After careful consideration and thorough discussions and having received no indications regarding certain required regulatory approval, both parties have agreed to terminate their merger agreement having passed August 15, 2023, outside date," Tower Semiconductor said in a statement.
