London Court Dismisses Apple's Appeal in Dispute With Optis Says iPhone and iPad Models Infringed 4G Patents

Apple infringed two telecommunications patents used in devices including iPhones and iPads , London's Court of Appeal ruled on Tuesday, dismissing the tech giant's appeal in a long-running dispute with a US patent holder. Texas-based Optis Cellular Technology sued Apple in 2019 over its use of patents which Optis says are essential to certain technological standards, such as 4G. London's High Court ruled last year that two of Optis' 4G patents were so-called standard essential patents and that Apple had infringed them. Apple appealed against that decision in May, arguing that the two patents in issue were not essential to 4G standards and that it had not infringed the patents. But its challenge was rejected by the Court of Appeal, with Judge Colin Birss saying in a written ruling that the High Court was "right to reject (Apple's) argument for non-infringement" and on the issue of the patents being essential. Apple and Optis did not immediately respo

Twitter Chaos Over Tweet-Reading Limits Leaves Door Open for Metas Rival Microblogging App Threads

Elon Musk spent the weekend further alienating Twitter users with more drastic changes to the social media giant, and he is facing a new challenge as tech nemesis Mark Zuckerberg prepares to launch a rival app this week. Zuckerberg's Meta group, which owns Facebook , has listed a new app in stores as "Threads, an Instagram app", available for pre-order in the United States, with a message saying it is "expected" this Thursday. The two men have clashed for years but a recent comment by a Meta executive suggesting that Twitter was not run "sanely" irked Musk, eventually leading to the two men offering each other out for a cage fight. Since buying Twitter last year for $44 billion (roughly Rs. 3,37,465 crore), Musk has fired thousands of employees and charged users $8 a month to have a blue checkmark and a "verified" account. On the weekend, he limited the posts readers could view and decreed that nobody could look at a tweet unless they

Micron to Start Plant Construction in August Domestic Microchip Production to Begin by 2024-End: Report

The government will break ground next month on its first semiconductor assembly plant and begin producing its first domestically manufactured microchips by the end of 2024, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. IT minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said Micron Technology would start construction in August on a $2.75 billion chip assembly and test facility in Gujarat, the newspaper reported . Last month, Micron signed a memorandum of understanding with the government to build a semiconductor plant, its first factory in the country. Micron said last week it will invest up to $825 million (roughly Rs. 6,760 crore) in the facility. With support from the Indian central government and the state of Gujarat, the total investment will be $2.75 billion, it added. The facility will be constructed in Sanand, near the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat. Micron said construction of the new facility in Gujarat is expected to begin in 2023 and the first phase of the project will be operational in late 20

Twitter Restricted Tweet Viewing for Users: Impact Challenges Alternatives Explained

Elon Musk 's Twitter has put a temporary limit on the number of tweets that users can see each day, a move that has sparked some backlash and could undermine the social network's efforts to attract advertisers. The limit, imposed to "address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation", is the latest change by Twitter , which was last year acquired by Musk for $44 (roughly Rs. 3,61,000 crore) billion. What does the latest change mean and what are the alternatives to Twitter? How do the changes impact users? Users cannot view tweets without logging in to the platform. Verified accounts can now read 6,000 posts per day, unverified accounts 600 posts and new unverified accounts 300 posts. After that, users will get a message that says, "rate limit exceeded". Musk has said that limit will "soon" increase to 10,000 for verified, 1,000 for unverified and 500 for new unverified. He has been pushing to make Twitter's overhauled verifi

Google Set to Hire Apple Microsoft Alumnus Sreenivasa Reddy as India Policy Head

Alphabet 's Google is set to appoint a manufacturing and policy veteran as its top government affairs executive in India to tackle legal challenges and expand hardware assembly to the country. Sreenivasa Reddy , currently a senior engineering executive at Microsoft , is likely to join Google toward the end of this year, people familiar with the matter said, asking not to be identified as the matter is private. He previously worked in senior positions at Apple 's India regulatory team and headed government relations at the local unit of Swedish telecom-gear maker Ericsson AB, helping to drive domestic manufacturing at both companies. Reddy's experience will come in handy at Google, which is scouting for partners in India to assemble its Pixel range of smartphones as it seeks to diversify beyond China. Pixel's production in India could lead to the local manufacturing of other Google hardware products, such as speakers. The executive will also help Google navigate regu
